A new art space is opening in Singapore this week. IMBA Theatre will officially open its doors on 13 February 2026 at Gardens by the Bay, introducing a permanent venue dedicated to immersive art experiences.
Short for Immersive Media Based Arts, IMBA Theatre blends large-scale digital projection, sound and storytelling to create exhibitions that feel more like stepping into a film than walking through a traditional gallery.
The space is designed for audiences to move through and be surrounded by the artwork, rather than viewing pieces on a wall.
David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away)
This immersive showcase dives into the world of British artist David Hockney, one of the most influential artists of the past century. Instead of displaying physical paintings, the exhibition uses floor to ceiling projections and sound to explore Hockney’s creative journey over six decades.
Visitors can expect to see his vibrant landscapes, portraits and digital works brought to life at a massive scale. The experience also includes Hockney’s own voice, offering insight into how he sees perspective, space and the act of looking. It feels less like a history lesson and more like stepping inside the artist’s mind.
Botero in Singapore
Opening alongside the theatre is Botero in Singapore, a large-scale exhibition dedicated to Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Known for his signature rounded and exaggerated figures, Botero’s works are instantly recognisable.
The exhibition features over a hundred works spanning paintings, drawings and sculptures, tracing his career across several decades.
Visitors will also spot monumental bronze sculptures placed around the Gardens area, turning the outdoor space into part of the experience.
